It helps enormously if you include what you expected to happen, what happened instead, your call sign, and roughly when it happened.
Getting started
What do I need?
An iPhone running iOS 17.4 or later — and someone to talk to. Niner is a two-way radio, so almost nothing is useful on your own.
Why does it ask for my phone number?
Your number is how friends find you, and it's the only way to be reachable. We text you a six-digit code to confirm it. Your number is never shown publicly — people see your call sign.
Nobody can reach me / calls never arrive
Almost always notifications. Calls arrive as a notification, and if Niner was denied permission, nothing can ring your phone. Check iOS Settings → Niner → Notifications and turn them on. The microphone permission matters too: without it you can hear others but not talk.
I can't call someone
You both have to be connected first. Add them in Contacts and wait for them to accept. That's deliberate — it means a stranger who knows your number still can't put a voice in your pocket.
Calls and channels
How do I talk?
Press and hold the big button, speak, and let go. Only one person can transmit at a time, exactly like a real radio. Once you're on a call you can talk from the lock screen or the Dynamic Island.
Why did I get cut off mid-sentence?
A single turn runs up to 30 seconds. It's a walkie-talkie: short turns keep the channel usable for everyone. You'll feel a buzz five seconds before the end, and hear a double beep if you run out — two beeps means you were cut off, not that you finished.
How do I join a channel?
Tap the invite link someone shares with you. There's no code to type — the link is the invitation.
Who can change a channel's name or photo?
Only the person who created it. Any member can open a channel's Details from the three-dot menu to see who's in it, leave, or report it.
Hail sounds
What's a hail?
A recording of your own voice — up to five seconds — that plays on the other person's phone when you call them one-to-one, instead of a generic ringtone. Record one in Settings → Radio → Hail sound.
I don't want to hear other people's hails
Turn them off in Settings → Notifications. Calls will use the standard Niner tone instead.
Apple Watch
The watch is a button, not a radio. It has no microphone or speaker of its own — your iPhone captures and plays the audio. That means if your phone is in your pocket, you'll want headphones connected. Starting a call from the wrist works best with Niner open on your iPhone.
Subscription and billing
What does Niner cost?
Niner Plus is $1.99 per month for one person. Niner Family is $4.99 per month and covers your Apple Family Sharing group. Your first 72 hours are free and need no card.
How do I cancel, or get a refund?
Subscriptions are billed by Apple, not by us, so they're managed in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Cancelling there stops the renewal and you keep access until the period ends. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
I paid but Niner says I'm not subscribed
Open Niner, go to Settings → Niner Plus and tap Restore Purchases. If that doesn't sort it, email us with the Apple ID email you purchased under and we'll look it up.
Safety and privacy
Reporting someone, or a channel
Tap a contact and choose Report, or open a channel's Details and choose Report channel. Reports are private, reach a person, and a channel report tells us who runs it. You can also block anyone — blocked people can't call you or see you in their contacts.
Deleting your account
Settings → Account → Delete Account. This removes your profile, your contacts, your channel memberships and your call sign. It can't be undone, and it doesn't cancel an active subscription — do that separately in iOS Settings.
What you store about me
Short version: no ads, no trackers, no call logs on our servers, and no recordings of anything you say. The long version is in our Privacy Policy, and the rules of the road are in our Terms.
